Scrapbooking: Creating Memories

By now, if you’re interested in the crafting world, you probably know all about scrapbooking. You may have even created a scrapbook or two over the past few years. However, if you’re new to the scrapbooking world, it can seem like a very overwhelming craft to start. Entire stores are devoted to scrapbooking, and in your local craft store you might find that scrapbooking has taken over a number of isles. Don’t worry! Scrapbooking doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think. With only a few tools and supplies, you can begin this craft, moving into more difficult techniques as you learn.

Scrapbooking supplies Start with a basic scrapbook. The first supplies you need, of course, are pictures and memorabilia to use in your scrapbook. You can use your prints or you can make color photocopies that look use like the real thing to avoid cutting up your pictures. Second, you need the actual book. These come in a range of styles and sizes, but look for one that is photo-safe and acid free. Acid is what causes your pictures to yellow and become brittle, which is why many crafters are moving away from traditional photo albums and making these scrapbooks instead. The only other items you truly need to begin scrapbooking are a pen or marker and some kind of adhesive to hold your photographs to the page.

To make a scrapbook, all you have to do is stick the pictures to the page and then use your marker to record information about who is in the pictures and what they are doing. Journaling is very important, because in twenty years you’ll have forgotten names and dates, even if they seem very important to you now!

Simply sticking your pictures to the white pages that came with the scrapbook isn’t very creative, however. That’s where other supplies come into play. A number of printed and colored papers are available to use as backgrounds and mats. You can cut your photographs with special scissors and use paper punches to create designs. Sticks and cutouts also make your scrapbook more interesting.

If you want to learn the latest tips and trends in the scrapbooking world, or if you want to get a lot of creative ideas to use in your own scrapbook, consider taking a class. Most craft stores offer them every few weeks, and scrapbooking stores often have representatives that will come to your home to hold a class with you an your friends. Scrapbooking can be quite an addiction, but one that create a beautiful finished product.
